Hampfield after 1651 Emigrated to Virginia in 1620 on ship "Bona Nova". Settled on Eastermont River, Gloucester Co., VA. His first property was at old Point Comfort, near Mobjack Bay in Gloucester Co., then Isle of Wight Co., then Eastermont River, where he built a plantation named "Hampfield" after 1651. The plantation grounds include walking trails through pine forest, views of Wambaw Creek, and the remains of rice fields that once stretched as far as the eye could see. Hampton inspired the works of South Carolina’s first poet laureate, Archibald Rutledge—the last private owner of the house, who lived there until 1969. John Hampton (son of Thomas, William) purchased, 3 Mar 1674/5, from Richard Cary 196 ¾ acres in Gloucester County adjoining his father's plantation. He married (1) Mary Mann. On 5 Jun 1677 her uncle John Mann conveyed to him 157 acres in consideration of their marriage and on 8 Jun 1677 his father deeded him the 350 acres inherited from William Hampton.
